The song 'Grace' tells the story of a young Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett. The song is written from Joseph's perspective about his and his sweetheart Grace's wedding on the eve of Joseph's execution in Kilmainham Gaol after the Easter 1916 Rising. When Grace heard about the executions of Pearse, Clarke and MacDonagh, she bought a ring in a jeweller's in the city centre and headed to Kilmainham where she and a priest convinced the British militants to allow them to be married. She and Joseph were married on the night of 3 May in the chapel of Kilmainham Gaol a few hours before he was executed.
We learned all about the love story between Grace and Joseph and we were saddened when we listened to and discussed the lyrics of the song. Here is a video of us singing Grace - a beautiful version by the late Jim McCann.
