The class have been learning about plants and that all plants come from seeds. The class learned about the best conditions for the growth. The class learned that most seeds need moisture, warmth and nutrients to germinate. Some plants however need cold and dark conditions to grow. The children also identified the many different types of seeds from apple seeds to the potato seeds. The class got the opportunity to put some of this new knowledge into practice. The class planted marigolds, peas and potatoes from seeds. It is almost a month since we planted the marigolds and the peas and three weeks since we planted the potato seeds. Sam, Sarah, Nadine, Seán and Eric all agreed to look after the seedlings over the Easter break. The progress is remarkable due to care and attention the seedlings received. Below you can see a selection of photos to see the progress our seeds have made.
Last September we planted daffodil bulbs in the past month they have come into full bloom. Well done to all the kids for their efforts. It is great to see so many daffodils growing around the school grounds.
As part of our preparation for proclamation day we learned about the Easter Rising and the events that surrounded it. We also read the proclamation which Padraig Pearse read outside the G.P.O. on Sackville Street (O'Connell Street) in 1916. The class explored and gained an understanding of the vision that the 1916 signatories had. They wanted to create a fairer more equal Ireland. The class then created their own proclamation for a better Ireland in 2016 . The classes' ideas and suggestions were really inspirational. The class created a vision for Ireland that helps the homeless and those who are ill. Well done class! The children participated in the annual Céilí today. The class got dressed up in patriotic green white and orange. The class really had a great time and made a great effort with the dances. Well done to Ciara and Holly on their outstanding individual interval performances.
We got involved in lots of fun maths activities to participate in Maths Week 2015. We tried out the target boards on the maths website and became programmers using www.code.org. We also went on maths trail to identify all the 2-D shapes that are in our environment. Well done to Ciara and Kate for creating this excellent video. The class have been using Spelling City to improve spelling . This is a fun way of practicing and learning spellings. http://www.spellingcity.com
We have had a really busy few months and have enjoyed exploring new activities in fourth class. We dressed up for Halloween and wrote our very own spooky stories. Please have look through our many updates to get a taste of some of the activities we have enjoyed.
We learned about tall buildings from around the world this week and the tallest building in the world is The Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It is 829.8 metres tall and was constructed in 2010. We were set a challenge to create the tallest possible free standing structure with one sheet of A3 paper. They were not quite as tall as The Burj Khalifa but they were still impressive.
