We have completed our projects on China. We have been learning about life in China and about the culture there. We learned about the Chinese New Year celebrations and customs. Everyone found out what Chinese zodiac sign they were born in. We compared life in Ireland to life in China. We also created beautiful Chinese dragon scrolls in Art.
It's the first day of Summer!!! Yeah!! Today is traditionally known as "May Day" as it marks the first day of summer. We looked at pictures of May flowers and we then drew our own May flowers. We drew echo lines around the outline of each flower and chose colours from the same colour family to colour our outlines.
Today we are getting our Easter holidays. We had a half day in school and we all wore our jerseys for jersey day.
Today was Alanah's last day in school in Ireland!!! Her family are moving to Canada!! It is a very exciting time for Alanah. We were all sad to see her go but she will make loads of new friends in her school in Canada and have lots of adventures! We made Alanah a special memory book. We stuck in lots of pictures of our class and we all wrote a special message to her. Alanah's mum and aunt came to visit our class today. They made us delicious cupcakes which even had the Canadian and Irish flag on them! They gave us a goodie bag each with little treats as well!! Thanks Alanah!!
We have been busy learning all about Ancient Egypt! It is so interesting and fun! We completed our own Egyptian projects. We learned all about the ancient Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamen. We drew our own Tutankhamen pictures and coloured them in with yellow oil pastel. We then painted over them with blue paint. We also painted the face gold and added some facial features.
We learned a lot about mummification as well. Some details were gross!!! The Egyptians used to remove all of the internal organs from dead bodies and even pulled brains out through their nose before they were mummified!! We also designed our names in hieroglyphs, which is the ancient Egyptian form of writing. We learned about how the great pyramid of Egypt is built. We brought all our teddies into school today!! In history class we talked about toys that we played with in the past. We decided to bring in our most important teddy and share them with the class. We talked about when we got our teddy and told everyone it's name. Even Miss Quinn showed us her teddy that she has since the day she was born!!!
It's Mothers Day this Sunday! We will all do something extra special for all of our mammies to say thank you for all the hard work they do for us every day!! We decided they deserve to relax and take a break so we decided to make teapot cards to remind them to take a cup of tea!! Happy Mothers Day to all mothers!!
We are learning all about adjectives in school. Adjectives are describing words. They describe a noun. Adjectives make our writing much more interesting. We wrote an adjective poem describing our favourite things. Firstly we watched a video of Julie Andrews singing the classic song, "My favourite things" from the famous film, "The Sound of Music". When she is singing she describes all of her favourite things using adjectives. We then wrote our own adjective poem entitled, "My Favourite Things".
It is lovely spring weather so we decided to create beautiful sunflower paintings. We looked at Vincent Van Gogh's famous "Sunflower" painting. We then painted our own version of his sunflowers.
