St. Cronan's Senior School Homework Policy
Homework is viewed as a cooperative activity between school and home in which the child is enabled to revise schoolwork and develop good work habits. Homework enables the parent to monitor the child’s progress.
As a matter of policy we set homework four evenings a week, Monday to Thursday. In setting homework we are sensitive to the variation that exists between children, in their ages, abilities and perceived home support.
Each child is required to have a school journal and parents are requested to refer to the journal each evening. Parents are requested to sign the journal/copy when homework is completed. The journal is also used as an effective parent - teacher communication channel.
As a general guideline a sixth class pupil should spend one hour on homework each night with appropriate reductions for fifth, fourth, and third classes. Oral work, written work and research qualify as homework. Class teachers and learning support teachers work closely together. As such, children who attend learning support for English and/or Maths only do the homework assigned by the learning support teacher.
If a child cannot cope with the homework parents should inform the teacher through the homework journal.
Parents will be notified when there is a persistent problem regarding homework.
