Well done to the senior hurling team who won the Sciath J.M. & O B in Croke Park today against Drimnagh Castle on a scoreline of 6-6 to 4-6. The weather was perfect and what a game we had ! The game was very tight in the first half with very little separating the teams. Our backs bravely stood up to the attacks and James O'Reilly was tigerish in defence. While Ben C, Kyle M and Ben S were a serious threat in the full forward line. Ben S lead the line with distinction and scored a magnificent goal in the first half to give our outstanding fans something to cheer about. Lauren and Prince were introduced before half time and got involved immediately.
After some inspirational words from our midfielder Dylan at half time we really hit the ground running in the second half with early scores from full forward Ben S and half forward Josh, However our defenders were called into action from then on and repelled many attacks. Conor's bravery in defence left him with a heroic battle scar. It was this sort of commitment that meant we never once surrendered the lead. Gary, Aaron and Sarah repeatedly burst out with the ball from the full back line to relieve the pressure on our ever ready captain and goalkeeper Josh. Adam made some crucial blocks to help keep our noses in front, while James on the other wing was as solid as rock . As the game continued our leaders really started to impose themselves on the game and centre back Jamie limited their star centre forward to very few opportunities.
Josh's puck outs were really causing the opposition lots of difficulties . Graham's influence on the game grew and grew and provided our forwards with fantastic ball. Kyle on the half forward worked tirelessly to allow our full forward line to take advantage of the fast ball now being supplied. With just over ten minutes left in the game and only a point between the teams we introduced Emma to the action, Emma has shown before, to have a keen eye for goal. She did not disappoint and rattled the net to increase our lead to four in the closing stages. Despite all this we couldn't seem to pull a safe distance clear. It was really heart in the mouth stuff!
Daniel, Jack, Gavin, Kyle and Prince were all introduced in the second half and made things really difficult for their defenders. Josh C was very effective when he moved to centre forward for the injured Conor K. With minutes to go we were just one goal up, when Dylan dispatched a rocket to the corner from a sideline cut.We added one more point to give us a little breathing space with moments to go.
The final whistle was greeted with wild celebrations both in the stands and on the pitch. The whole team performed admirably and really stood up to a very stern test. In the end our class and commitment got us over the line. It is also important to remember Dylan O'R whose crucial goal in the semi final made this day possible.
Given it was such an amazing team performance from 1 to 21 it is hard to pick out individuals. However Ben S was in inspired form scoring 3-1 from play. His goals would be worthy of gracing Croke Park on any day between now and All Ireland final Sunday. He posed a serious threat as Josh C, and others further out the field provided Ben with outstanding ball. Well done to all involved, a hugely impressive display.
