St. Cronan's Senior School School Tours and Outings Policy
School tours and outings for St. Cronan’s S.N.S. are arranged to present the children with a new environment in which they can observe, investigate and relate their findings to their own environment, as well as enhancing their social and behavioural skills.
This is in line with our school motto “Cáirde le chéile ag foghlaim”.
All class levels, from 3rd class to 6th class, partake in one school tour per year, with the possibility of a further excursion.
Teachers choose their School Tour from this list:
• DCU/ Gormanstown/ UCD Adventure Centre
• Fort Lucan and The Butterfly Farm
• Viking Splash
• Kilmainham Gaol
• Carlingford Adventure Centre
• Kippure Adventure Centre,
• National Gallery,
• The Causey Experience
• Places in Dublin of Historical/ Geographical and Scientific interest.
• Local castles- Swords, Malahide and Ardgillan

• Government Buildings.
Class teachers consult with each other to determine the school tour. Classes go on a school tour in groups of two or more classes.
Extra school outings: Hallelujah Concert, DPS related tours. Football matches, local library and selected Fingal County Council activities.
Uniforms:
Pupils wear the school tracksuit on a school tour unless informed otherwise by the class teacher. Rain gear and a change of clothes may be necessary, depending on the venue.
Cost:
The class teacher(s) will ensure that the cost of the tour is reasonable, and represents value for money. The collection of money is the responsibility of the class teacher. The teacher gives a receipt to each child who has paid. Monies collected are sent to the office. Tours are paid for by school cheque only.
Teachers will agree, and notify their class of the upper limit on spending money if any. This will be based on age and venue.
Conduct on Tours:
Pupil’s behaviour on tour will comply with the standard set down in the school’s Code of Behaviour.
Safety and Supervision:
Teachers will be extra vigilant when taking children out of school. SNA’s accompany children with special needs on school tours. Two adults, one of whom is a teacher must accompany every school tour. Parents , at the discretion of the class teacher, may be invited to assist with supervision on school trips. Parents may be asked to supervise a small group of children for a specified time while visiting an exhibition where a large group would get little value from the experience.
Teachers on whole school trips i.e. football matches are required to identify the cohort of pupils that they are supervising. Name tags/colour coding may be used.
Special attention will be paid to: Road Safety, Behaviour on the bus and Behaviour at the venue. Teachers will make every effort to ensure that the bus has safety belts. All buses must depart from, and return to the school.
The teacher brings a list of children’s names and relevant phone numbers and a first aid kit. The defibrillator may be brought. The school mobile phone policy is applicable to the children while on a school tour. Mobile phones may not be used by the pupils while on a school tour.
Teachers are requested to have their own mobile phone turned on for a school tour so that they can be contacted by the school in an emergency. The teacher gives his/her mobile phone number to the Principal before the tour.
Informing Parents:
Teachers will ensure that parents are given sufficient notice of:
(a) Itinerary and timetable
(b) Cost
(c) Special clothing
(d) Packed lunch.
Tour destination and dates, as well as departure and arrival times, are to be forwarded to the school Principal when organised.
The Principal seeks Board approval for all school tours at the beginning of each school year. The Principal reports to the Board of Management on school tours.
