St. Cronan's Senior School Schoolyard Policy
Introduction :
The objective of a Code of Behaviour in the Schoolyards, Glasmore and Windmill yard, is to ensure that all children are provided with a safe environment in which to play happily for 30 minutes. We have 630 children on roll. Approximately half the children are in each yard. Our yard policy is in line with our school motto “Cairde le chéile ag foghlaim”. We promote skipping as a healthy activity in the yard.
The Class Teacher
Procedures:
a) Children line up and exit the classroom under teacher’s supervision at 1.00pm
b) Teacher advises the children to wear a coat in inclement weather.
c) Children go to the toilet before they go out to the yard
d) Three teachers are rostered per day supervising each yard.
e} Special Needs Assistants supervise children in their care as necessary
The supervision roster is on display in the staffroom.
Good behaviour is expected from every child. Good behaviour is predicated on safety, respect for self and others, and politeness.
Agreed Schoolyard Rules:
• Children may walk in the yard
• Skipping is encouraged
• Playing with little toys is permitted
• Electronic toys are not permitted
• In June, children are permitted to sit on the grass, provided their feet are on the tarmac at all times.
• Children may not play on roller blades, scooters or bicycles in the yard.
• In an emergency a child is allowed to return to the school to go to the toilet. Children in the Glasmore yard to the toilets at Room 5/6. Children on the Windmill yard go to the toilets on the main corridor. On returning to the yard the child reports to a supervising teacher.
• The bell is rung just before 1.30. Children take responsibility for the bell. On the first ring the children in the yard “freeze”. On the second ring the children walk to their lines.
• Teachers monitor the behaviour in the line and award marks accordingly. The class with the most marks in each yard is awarded the Glasmore/Windmill cup for the week.
• Teachers accompany the children back from the yard to their classrooms at 1.30p.m.
• Children cope with small accidents (slight scratch) in the yard.
• Blood injuries / accidents are recorded in the Accident book by the class teacher in consultation with the teacher on duty and co-signed by the Principal/Deputy Principal.
• Play fighting /mess fighting is not permitted
• Children do not take food to the yard
Consequences of breaking the rules
We employ a staged approach as follows:
a) One verbal or non-verbal warning
b) On non-compliance teacher instructs the child to stand at the wall for a brief period.
c) Repeat offenders are required to return to the wall.
d) More serious offenders or any serious breaches of discipline are recorded in the yard book. This is returned to the Principal. The Principal may consult with the class teacher when dealing with yard incidents.
e) Serious misbehaviour is dealt with as already outlined in Code of Behaviour.
f) Alcohol, drugs and pornography are not permitted in St. Cronan's S.NS. and will be dealt with as very serious misbehaviour.
g) Smoking and chewing gum are forbidden in St. Cronan's S.N.S.
This policy is reviewed periodically as required by the changing needs of the school.
